People's Majlis, parliament of the Maldives debates on criminalizing blasphemy.

Bill on amendment to the Penal Code was introduced by Hisaan Hussein, MP for Thulhaadhoo Constituency, on behalf of the government. After introducing the bill Hisaan noted that, already blasphemy is a crime mentioned in the Penal Code. However, she said its important to further detail the issue and clearly mention it.

Article 617 of the penal code, already mentions a list of blasphemous activities towards Islam. With the new amendment, blasphemous activities using telecommunication devices, through verbal or action is added to the list.

The government also submitted a bill against hate speech. However, with the pressure from Islamic radicals, Government backed MPs decided not to pass the bill.
