Hundreds of Villigili residents took to the streets demanding improved healthcare services following the death of a woman and her newborn due to delays in medical treatment.
Shiuna and her baby died on the runway while being transported to Malé by air ambulance. Her family and friends allege that she passed away due to a lack of oxygen and inadequate medical equipment on the flight. They also claim that the air ambulance was delayed due to negligence by medical staff at Villigili Atoll Hospital.
Protesters called for a full investigation into the deaths and demanded the establishment of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the hospital, along with better-trained doctors and healthcare professionals. They also urged people not to politicize the issue, stating that they stand with the government.
Island Council Chief and other government officials participated in the march, showing solidarity with the residents’ demands for better healthcare services.
