Maldives Vice President Hussein Mohamed Latheef was among the passengers onboard United Airlines Flight 1169, which was forced to turn back mid-air following a bomb threat on Wednesday, May 21.
The flight, en route from Honolulu, Hawaii to Los Angeles, was diverted shortly after takeoff when a suspicious note indicating a bomb threat was discovered in the aircraft’s bathroom. The plane returned to Honolulu, where passengers were evacuated and lined up on the tarmac while authorities conducted a full sweep with detection dogs.
Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that Vice President Hussein was treated like any other passenger during the emergency response. He remained on the aircraft for several hours before being evacuated and subsequently held at the airport along with other passengers as law enforcement conducted investigations.
According to reliable sources, the Vice President has not yet returned to the Maldives and is currently in Dubai. There has been no official statement from the Government of Maldives regarding the incident.
United Airlines and U.S. law enforcement authorities have not confirmed the nature of the threat, and investigations are ongoing.
