Once honoured with one of the Maldives’ highest state distinctions for his service to the nation, former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid is now facing a very different chapter in his public life — a 30-day remand in connection with allegations of child sexual abuse.
The Criminal Court has remanded Shahid in custody for 30 days following his arrest by Maldives Police on Monday night. His arrest was carried out under a court order after a case was reported to the authorities.
Shahid is accused of sexually abusing his underage stepdaughter. The allegations are yet to be established in court.
The arrest marks a striking contrast in the public journey of a man who once represented the Maldives on the international stage, serving as Foreign Minister and later as President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
His career brought him diplomatic prominence and national recognition, including one of the country’s highest state honours. Now, his name is before the Criminal Court as he faces serious allegations.
From state recognition to a court-ordered arrest, the developments mark a dramatic turn in the public life of one of the Maldives’ most recognisable diplomatic figures.
