Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has condemned the UK government's potential transfer of Peros Banhos Atoll to Mauritius, calling it a "deeply misguided policy." In a social media statement today, he emphasised the Maldives' historical claims to the atoll, warning that such a move could destabilise relationships among Indian Ocean nations.

The atoll is part of the disputed Chagos Archipelago, which the UK separated from Mauritius in 1965. While the International Court of Justice recently ruled in favour of Mauritius, the UK has resisted ceding control.

Nasheed cautioned that conceding Peros Banhos would undermine Maldivian territorial claims and provoke further disputes. The issue has gained traction amid public protests in Mauritius demanding the return of the Chagos Archipelago and concerns over environmental protection in the region.

As discussions continue, Nasheed's comments highlight the complexities of colonial legacies and national sovereignty in the Indian Ocean, with significant implications for regional stability.
