Hassan Ziyau, The Director of Media and Communication at the People’s Majlis Secretariat has been abruptly dismissed, allegedly for speaking out against internal corruption, a move which he claims violates the Parliamentary Service Regulation. In a statement following his termination, the former Director highlighted that his removal came after raising concerns over corrupt practices and favoritism within the Secretariat.
The former Director alleged that senior officials, including Secretary General Fathimath Niusha, Deputy Secretary General Mohamed Rasheed, Head of Administration Ahmed Faiz, and Director of Foreign Relations Zuyyina Badhree, were implicated in these actions. He stated that the accusations against him were fabricated as retaliation for refusing to endorse backdated documents and his opposition to corrupt activities.
The dismissal raises further concerns, as the People’s Majlis was listed among the most corrupt institutions in the country in the Transparency Maldives Corruption Perception Index. The ex-Director believes that his termination is a direct result of his efforts to expose malpractice, calling on responsible institutions to investigate the long-standing accusations from staff members against the implicated officials.
In response, the former Director plans to take the matter to the Employment Tribunal, Human Rights Commission, and the General-Purpose Committee of Parliament, which oversees the operations of the Secretariat.
