Hulhumalé, Maldives — The Maldives Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Mohamed Shamoon following an attack on a man at Hulhumalé's Raakani Beach. The incident, which occurred on Friday night, was reported to authorities and has since gained significant attention due to a viral video circulating on social media. In the footage, Shamoon is clearly seen striking the victim with a chair.

Shamoon, who was the Progressive National Congress (PNC) candidate for the Vaikaradhoo Constituency in last year’s parliamentary elections, lost to the opposition candidate. While the motive for the altercation remains unclear, social media posts suggest that the dispute may have involved financial issues, alleging that Shamoon owed money to the victim and had been in hiding. These claims, however, have not been independently verified.

The Maldives Police have not disclosed further details regarding the nature of the conflict but have confirmed that an investigation is underway. The incident has sparked discussions online about public figures and accountability, drawing a wide range of reactions from the community.
