Holhudhoo, Maldives — Thousands of residents from Holhudhoo Island took to the streets on Tuesday, demanding justice for Zakkiyaa Moosa, a 50-year-old woman who was found dead under suspicious circumstances on September 10, 2024.

Zakkiyaa’s body was discovered with multiple injuries, initially leading authorities to consider the case a suicide. However, the Maldives Police Service later launched a criminal investigation after growing concerns from the community. Despite this, more than two months have passed without any resolution, prompting islanders to call for an expedited investigation.

Protesters marched through the streets holding banners and placards with messages such as #JusticeForZakkiyaa and #FailedPolice. Demonstrators insisted that Zakkiyaa’s death was not a suicide and urged authorities to provide answers and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Zakkiyaa’s death has left a deep scar on our community, and we won’t stop until justice is served,” said one protester during the demonstration.

The large-scale protest highlights mounting frustration over delays in the investigation, with many residents expressing distrust in the police's ability to handle the case. The Maldives Police Service has yet to provide updates or comment on the status of the investigation.

As the calls for justice grow louder, the protest underscores the community’s demand for accountability and swift action to resolve the case and restore faith in the justice system.
