Malé, Maldives – Maldives Immigration, in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service, has intensified its operations against undocumented and illegal migrant workers across the country.

On Thursday, Immigration officials raided nine local cafés in the capital city, Malé, resulting in the apprehension of four undocumented workers. A similar operation on Wednesday targeted eight cafés, leading to the arrest of three undocumented workers.

The crackdown is part of the government's broader effort to address the rising number of undocumented workers in the Maldives. Over the past 11 months, more than 4,000 undocumented workers have been deported, according to Maldives Immigration.

Authorities have confirmed that these operations are not limited to Malé but extend to other islands and urban centers nationwide, aiming to ensure compliance with immigration laws.

The Maldives has long faced challenges in managing undocumented migrant workers, with many employed in informal sectors such as construction and hospitality. The government’s recent actions reflect its commitment to tackling this issue and addressing associated concerns such as labor exploitation and public safety.

Immigration officials have urged businesses and employers to comply with legal procedures when hiring foreign workers, warning that violations will result in legal consequences.

The ongoing raids are expected to continue as the government works to strengthen its immigration enforcement measures.
