National volleyball player Ahmed Faazil, 31, of Keyodhoo, has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking following a police operation in Vaavu Atoll.
According to the Maldives Police Service, Faazil was arrested on Thursday after officers from the Drug Enforcement Department and Counter Narcotics Intelligence, together with Vaavu Atoll police, conducted a raid on two houses in Keyodhoo where he was suspected of selling drugs.
Police said 265.01 grams of suspected drugs were recovered during the operation.
Faazil was produced before the court for a remand hearing and subsequently remanded in custody for 10 days as the investigation continues.
Faazil has previously represented the Maldives national volleyball team.
The arrest comes amid another ongoing police investigation involving Faazil and his brother, national volleyball player Fairooz. Both brothers were arrested last month following an alleged assault on an elderly man.
Police are continuing to investigate that incident as well as the latest suspected drug trafficking case.
Faazil has not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations against him remain subject to investigation and due process.
