The Maldives Police Service has concluded that the death of 50-year-old Zakiyaa Moosa, who was found with multiple injuries on her neck at her home on September 24, 2024, was a suicide. In a press conference held today, police stated that no evidence was found to suggest that her death was caused by anyone’s actions.

The police statement comes after thousands of residents from Holhudhoo took to the streets, demanding justice for Zakiyaa and urging authorities to expedite the investigation. Last week, large-scale protests were held on the island, with residents carrying placards that read, “Zakiyaa’s death was not a suicide” and “Police have failed.”

During the press conference, police assured the public that they had thoroughly investigated all rumors and speculations surrounding Zakiyaa’s death. They presented evidence, including a knife they believe was used to inflict the wounds. Forensic analysis confirmed that the blood on the knife matched that of the deceased.

The police reiterated their commitment to conducting a comprehensive investigation and addressing public concerns. However, the conclusion of suicide has been met with skepticism from Holhudhoo residents, who continue to demand further scrutiny of the case.

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about the effectiveness of investigative procedures and the need for transparency in high-profile cases in the Maldives.
