Maldives Police have towed more than 20 taxis that blocked the main highway connecting Hulhumale to the Male-Hulhumale Bridge as part of a protest by taxi drivers. The drivers were demonstrating against the government’s plans to establish a state-owned taxi service in the capital area.

The protest began in the early evening hours at Hulhumale’s Ruhgandu area. As the evening progressed, taxi drivers escalated their demonstration by parking their vehicles on the main road leading to the highway. This blockade caused significant traffic disruptions, particularly as the highway serves as the sole road to the Maldives' main international airport.

In response to the blockade, police towed away more than 20 taxis and arrested three drivers involved in the protest. Authorities acted to clear the highway to restore traffic flow and minimize the impact on commuters and airport operations.

Taxi drivers have vowed to continue their demonstrations until their demands are met, including the resignation of the Transport Minister. They argue that the introduction of a government-owned taxi service will adversely affect their livelihoods.

The protest caused heavy traffic congestion in the area, inconveniencing travelers and raising concerns about disruptions to airport access. The government has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the protest or the taxi drivers' demands.
