Malé, Maldives — President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu returned to Malé this afternoon after concluding a visit to several islands in South Ari Atoll, where he engaged with communities, island councils, and Women’s Development Committees (WDCs). The trip marked the final leg of his nationwide council consultation series for the year, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing local concerns and driving development.
During his meetings, President Muizzu addressed pressing development issues and shared several significant initiatives:
- Women’s Development Committees: In Adh. Dhan’gethi, he announced that WDC members would receive a salary and Ramadan allowance starting next year, underlining the government’s dedication to empowering women leaders in local governance.
- Foreign Currency Bill: The President discussed the newly ratified Foreign Currency Bill, highlighting its benefits, such as permitting dollar transactions and doubling credit card limits, which he said would ease financial challenges for the public.
- Tourism Revenue for Councils: President Muizzu announced plans to amend regulations to allow a percentage of local tourism revenue to be directly allocated to councils. This initiative, once approved by Parliament, would grant councils greater financial autonomy to drive community projects and development.
The President visited health centers and schools in the islands to observe their current conditions and better understand the needs of local communities. He emphasized that his administration remains committed to improving these essential services.
Addressing the recent fire that destroyed three government ministries, the President expressed his sorrow over the incident, acknowledging its emotional impact and pledging resilience in overcoming such challenges. He offered encouragement to the affected employees and the public, reassuring them of the government’s unwavering support.
President Muizzu also announced plans to visit all islands of the Maldives by 2025, demonstrating his commitment to direct engagement with communities across the nation.
