Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in the Maldives, highlighting sectors including renewable energy, fisheries processing, digital technology, healthcare and sustainable urban development.
Speaking at the China-Maldives Investment Cooperation Forum, held alongside Maldives Expo 2026, the President said the Maldives was open to responsible investment and committed to helping investments succeed.
Muizzu highlighted the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force on January 1, 2025. He said the Maldives imported approximately 440 million US dollars worth of goods from China between January 2025 and August 2026, with around 124 million dollars of imports entering under the agreement.
The President said the Maldives aimed to expand economic cooperation beyond trade, particularly by helping local fisheries products, handicrafts and services access the Chinese market.
He also highlighted the new Foreign Investment Act, which replaces legislation that had governed foreign investment for more than four decades, and said it was intended to improve transparency, policy certainty and investor confidence.
Muizzu said attracting investment was important for diversifying the economy, creating jobs and developing local skills as the Maldives works towards its Vision 2040 goal of becoming a fully developed nation.
