Malé, Maldives – Police have arrested a 33-year-old man for illegal alcohol possession following a search operation by the Drug Enforcement Department in Malé City.

The suspect, identified as Mohamed Ahuzam Saeed from Gdh. Gadhdhoo Island, was apprehended after police acted on intelligence regarding the sale of alcohol in the capital. Alcohol was found on the motorbike he was driving during a stop and search on a main road in the city.

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway as part of stepped-up efforts to combat illegal alcohol sales in the country. Police noted that cases of illegal alcohol distribution often see an uptick during the New Year holiday period.

The Maldives Police Service has urged the public to report any suspicious activities to help maintain order and ensure compliance with local laws.
