President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will depart on an official visit to the Republic of Estonia from January 13-16, 2025, at the invitation of Estonian President Dr. Alar Karis. This marks the first official visit to Estonia by a sitting Maldivian President and aims to enhance bilateral cooperation and explore potential partnerships in areas such as digital governance, climate action, and education.
During the visit, President Muizzu will hold high-level meetings with President Karis, Estonian Parliament President Lauri Hussar, and several key ministers, including those overseeing education, climate, health, justice, and digital affairs. Discussions will focus on Estonia's globally commended innovations in digital governance, with emphasis on learning from its e-governance platforms, e-Residency program, and integration of AI and digital solutions.
President Muizzu will also visit Tartu, Estonia's second-largest city and home to the University of Tartu, which ranks among the world’s top scientific institutions. The President will engage with researchers at the Estonian Genome Database Centre and the Greenergy Data Centre, exploring advancements in medicine, data science, and sustainable energy.
A roundtable discussion organized by the Digital Advisory Council to the President of Estonia will further provide an avenue for exploring collaborative opportunities. The visit underscores President Muizzu’s commitment to digital transformation, a key priority of his administration, with goals to establish a digital economy contributing 15% of the Maldives' GDP by 2030.
Accompanying the President will be Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, and a senior government delegation. A private delegation of Maldivian tech leaders will also participate, engaging with Estonian companies and institutions in the digital sphere.
Estonia’s exemplary digital transformation journey offers valuable insights for the Maldives, as the government works towards its Digital Transformation Roadmap and Strategy, in line with its broader vision to transform the nation into a developed economy by 2040.
