Maldives President’s Historic Visit to Estonia: Strengthening Ties in Digital Innovation and Climate Action

Tallinn, Estonia – President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives was warmly received by Estonian President Dr. Alar Karis during a historic visit, marking the first time a Maldivian Head of State has visited Estonia.
The visit began with an official ceremony at Kadriorg Palace, where both leaders inspected the Guard of Honour and exchanged introductions with dignitaries. Discussions between the Presidents focused on collaboration in digital technology, climate change, tourism, and education. President Muizzu praised Estonia’s expertise in renewable energy and digital innovation, identifying them as valuable models for the Maldives.
During a meeting with Estonia’s Minister of Education and Research, Ms. Kristina Kallas, President Muizzu explored opportunities for scholarships, capacity building, and knowledge sharing to enhance educational opportunities for Maldivian youth.
A separate meeting with Estonia’s Minister of Climate, Ms. Yoko Alender, emphasized renewable energy, environmental resilience, and shared challenges in combating climate change. The discussions culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in climate change, environment, and energy.
At an official dinner hosted by President Karis, President Muizzu highlighted the significance of the visit, praising Estonia’s achievements in digital transformation and expressing optimism about the future of Maldives-Estonia relations.
This landmark visit sets the stage for deeper cooperation in education, climate resilience, and digital innovation, reinforcing shared goals and mutual respect between the two nations.
