President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has endorsed the Prosecutor General’s Office's decision to revoke immunity and cooperation agreements granted to individuals implicated in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
In a post on his official X account, President Muizzu emphasized the need for equal treatment under the law to combat corruption, reaffirming his Administration’s commitment to restoring accountability and transparency.
The decision, announced on January 19, 2025, marks a significant shift in addressing one of the Maldives’ largest corruption cases. Agreements with four suspects—Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor (H. Saamaraa), Ahmed Ishfah Ali (M. Land of Garden), Mohamed Allam Latheef (M. Cessna), and Mohamed Hussain (G. Oivaali)—were terminated after their failure to meaningfully cooperate in recovering stolen state funds.
This move follows the 2022 cancellation of an immunity agreement with former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath, who was similarly found to have offered little assistance in recovering embezzled money.
The Prosecutor General’s Office has directed the Maldives Police Service and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to expedite investigations into the suspects.
The MMPRC corruption scandal, involving the embezzlement of over MVR 1 billion through lease transactions of state-owned islands and lagoons, remains one of the country’s most significant financial fraud cases.
