The newly built Hankede Detour Link Road in Addu City is now open to the public, providing an alternative route for traffic passing through the Hankede area. The 1.463-kilometer four-lane road, linking Hithadhoo’s Gaukede with Maradhoo, was constructed as part of the Addu Road and Storm Water Drainage Development Project.

Developed by Indian company AFCONS Infrastructure, the project was funded under the USD 800 million line of credit facility from the Indian Exim Bank. Initially awarded in 2021 with a planned completion timeline of two years, the project faced delays, ultimately taking over four years to finish.

The detour link road aims to support the planned integrated tourism development in Hankede by diverting traffic away from the area. Unlike the existing link road, which cuts through Hankede, the newly built route separates the land, creating more space for tourism-related infrastructure.

With the completion of this project, authorities anticipate improved traffic flow and enhanced opportunities for tourism development in the region.
