Two Chinese tourists escaped a serious accident after a parasailing ride malfunctioned near Maafushi on Monday.
The incident occurred in Maafushi, one of the Maldives’ busiest local tourism destinations, when the parasail carrying the two tourists reportedly became unstable in strong winds. The parasail was flying at a relatively low altitude over the water when it malfunctioned before becoming entangled on the zipline connecting Maafushi and Kuda Maafushi.
Videos circulating on social media show the two tourists falling from the parasail into the sea. They were quickly rescued by people on a nearby jet ski.
One of the tourists sustained minor injuries during the fall, while no other serious injuries were reported.
The incident comes as the Maldives experiences unsettled weather conditions, with rain forecast in several parts of the country and westerly winds reaching up to 30 mph. The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has also issued a white alert for forecast sea swells across the country.
Authorities have not yet provided further details regarding the cause of the malfunction or whether any investigation has been initiated.
