Two underage students critically injured in a motorcycle accident on R. Fainu were airlifted to Malé on Friday morning for advanced medical treatment, according to hospital and local officials.

The accident occurred on Thursday night when the motorcycle, ridden by the two minors, struck two pedestrians who were out exercising. Neither of the riders held a valid driving licence.

Both riders sustained serious injuries and were initially treated at the Raa Atoll Regional Hospital in Ungoofaaru. Their condition was deemed critical, prompting the urgent transfer to Malé via air ambulance.

The pedestrians injured in the incident were the Fainu School Principal and the school’s Leading Teacher. They also received treatment but are reported to be in stable condition.

According to the island council, the accident was caused by speeding, and the riders were students of the same school. The case has raised fresh concerns over underage driving and road safety in the atolls.
