Malé, Maldives – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day state visit to the Maldives on Saturday evening, capping off the visit by attending the 60th Independence Day celebrations held at Republic Square in Malé.
During his stay, Prime Minister Modi engaged in high-level talks with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation. The visit, which marks Modi’s first trip to the Maldives since President Muizzu assumed office in 2023, also coincides with the 60th anniversary of both Maldivian independence and diplomatic relations between the two nations.
In a significant gesture of political engagement, Prime Minister Modi also met with various Maldivian political leaders, including representatives of the main opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The official farewell was held at Velana International Airport, where Modi was seen off by Maldives’ Minister of Finance and Planning Moos Zameer and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit underscored India’s continued interest in strengthening ties with its Indian Ocean neighbour, with several agreements and understandings expected to be followed up in the coming weeks.
