Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed Appointed as Chief Justice of the Maldives

Male’, Maldives – President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed, H. Host Side, as the new Chief Justice of the Maldives. The appointment was formalised during a special ceremony held on Tuesday morning at the President’s Office.

The appointment was made in accordance with Article 147 of the Maldives Constitution. Supreme Court Justice Uz Abdulla Hameed administered the oath of office. Following the swearing-in, Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee signed the official declaration of appointment.

Uz Abdul Ghanee brings extensive judicial and academic experience to the role. He holds an LLB (Hons.) in Law and Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University (2000), a Master’s degree in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Shariah Policy (2022), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching from the Islamic University of Maldives (2024). He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Legislative Policy.

Before his appointment as Chief Justice, Uz Abdul Ghanee served as President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal. His judicial career includes positions on the Supreme Court and Civil Court benches, as well as serving as Chief Judge of the High Court. He has also been a member of the Judicial Service Commission.

In addition to his judicial work, Uz Abdul Ghanee has contributed to legal education in the Maldives, having lectured at the Islamic University of Maldives, Villa College, and Zikura College.
