Maldives Police have arrested a 29-year-old man from Addu City after he allegedly incited violence and social disruption in a post on social media platform X.

The suspect, identified as Ali Anim Mufeed, was taken into custody under a court order after replying to a journalist’s post protesting the Media Regulatory Bill. In his response, he wrote: “If you want change, throw petrol bottles, lit places on fire, and make it difficult for people to walk on streets.” He further added that protest is “not a request but a demand.”

Police said he has been accused under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, citing his statements as promoting violence and disruption.

While the arrest followed his online remarks, some have suggested that Mufeed’s detention may also be linked to his outspoken criticism of the government and state officials.

The case remains under investigation.
