Malé, Maldives — President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce a new system from 2026 that will allow healthcare providers and hospitals to communicate directly with ministries and relevant state institutions as autonomous entities.

The President made the announcement while addressing residents of Maamigili on Monday night as part of his ongoing tour of inhabited islands in South Ari Atoll.

According to the President, the new mechanism aims to cut bureaucratic layers, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall workflow within the healthcare sector. He said the move will enable hospitals to manage administrative processes more independently, including medicine procurement, staff approvals, and the delivery of essential healthcare services.

President Muizzu also assured that all necessary technical and human resources required to implement the new system will be established before the end of this year.

During the meeting, the President also addressed another key issue frequently raised by island communities — the allocation of picnic islands. He confirmed that a designated picnic island will be assigned to each atoll, which can be used by local communities and for tourism activities in line with existing regulations.

The President noted that a Cabinet paper proposing the initiative is currently being drafted for consideration.
