Senior State Counsel at AGO Released After Husband Takes Responsibility in Drug Case

Malé, Maldives – The Head of Human Rights and International Affairs Division at the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), Senior State Counsellor Faena Fayyaz, has been released from custody after her husband took responsibility for the drugs found in their apartment in Hulhumalé.

According to the Maldives Police Service, Faena and her husband, Azhad, were arrested on Tuesday night following a police raid on their residence in Hulhumalé. The operation was conducted based on intelligence indicating that the apartment was being used for drug consumption.

Police confirmed that a large quantity of drugs was recovered from the apartment, although further details have not been disclosed. The police media group also confirmed that two individuals were arrested during an anti-drug operation in Hulhumalé on Tuesday night.

Faena was released on Wednesday under conditions, while Azhad was remanded in custody for 15 days as investigations continue.

Notably, police did not share mugshots or detailed information about the arrests with the media, despite usually releasing such details in similar cases.

The Maldives Police Service stated that the case remains under investigation.
