IMCTC Seminar in Addu Focuses on Preventing Extremism in Education

Addu City, Maldives – The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) has held a two-day seminar in Addu City under the theme “Manifestations of Ideological Extremism in the Education Environment”, as part of its strategic initiative “Prevention.”
The event brought together educators, security personnel, and government representatives to discuss the role of the education sector in preventing extremist ideologies and promoting awareness among youth.
On the first day, Professor Dr. Aref bin Awad Al-Rikabi delivered a lecture titled “Manifestations and Risks of Ideological Extremism within the Strategic Initiative ‘Prevention’,” focusing on how extremist ideologies infiltrate educational spaces and how to counter them effectively.
The second day featured interactive discussions with educators and representatives from the education sector, exploring practical measures to strengthen prevention strategies and community engagement.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Colonel Mohamed Jamshad, Commander of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Southern Area Command, emphasised the importance of awareness and collaboration in combating extremist ideologies.
He noted that preventing such ideologies requires active participation from all sectors, particularly the education sector, which plays a key role in shaping values and understanding among youth.
The seminar was attended by representatives from the Maldives National Defence Force, Maldives Police Service, and several government and educational institutions based in Addu City.
The IMCTC initiative aims to strengthen regional and institutional cooperation in countering extremist ideologies through education, awareness, and early prevention efforts.
