Local entrepreneur Hussein Sunny Umar is facing serious allegations of sexually abusing minors within his in-laws’ family, with claims circulating on social media that he privately confessed to the acts. Shortly after the allegations emerged, he reportedly fled to New Delhi.
Sunny is a prominent figure in the Maldivian tourism and media sectors. His company, The Travel Guys Pvt Ltd, operates several digital platforms, including Travelution, Maldives Halal Travel, The Island Post, and a travel agency under the Maldives Halal Travel brand.
Attempts to obtain comment from Sunny were unsuccessful.
The Maldives Police Service confirmed that no formal complaint has been filed so far. However, authorities have begun looking into the matter after the allegations gained traction online. “We are aware of the claims and are assessing the information currently available,” a police spokesperson said.
With Sunny reportedly now in New Delhi, legal cooperation between Maldives and India remains possible under the Maldives–India Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) signed in 2019, which allows for evidence sharing and coordination in criminal investigations.
Under the Sexual Offences Act (Act 17/2014), sexual acts involving minors are among the most serious offences in Maldivian law. If charged and convicted, such crimes carry prison sentences ranging from seven to fifteen years.
