The first batch of the National Service Initial Training concluded on Sunday, marking a meaningful milestone as 344 young Maldivians completed a journey designed to shape character, strengthen faith and instil a deep sense of national pride.

Launched on 1 October by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the three-month programme brought together 350 participants, with 344 successfully graduating after months of discipline, learning and shared experience. For many, the training was not just a course, but a transformative chapter that tested resilience, built confidence and forged lasting bonds.

The programme focused on nurturing nationalism, responsible citizenship and Islamic values, while also equipping participants with practical life skills. Trainees received education in leadership, religious studies and language proficiency, alongside physical training aimed at improving fitness, discipline and character. They were also trained in first aid, firefighting, self-defence, camping and basic military-related activities — skills intended to prepare them to serve their communities in times of need.

According to the Ministry of Defence, preparations are now underway to begin the second batch in January, with another 350 participants expected to join the programme.

Looking ahead, the Government plans to further expand the National Service by introducing vocational and technical training from January. This will allow graduates to pursue skills-based education aligned with their interests and available courses, opening pathways to meaningful employment and personal growth.

As the first batch steps forward into the next stage of their lives, their graduation stands as a reflection of renewed hope, purpose and commitment to the nation — and a foundation for a stronger, more resilient generation of Maldivian youth.
