President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday inaugurated Masjid Yoosuf Al Barbaree (Barbaree Mosque), formally opening the newly constructed mosque in conjunction with the Asr prayer.

The mosque, developed under a private contract, has been built as a modern three-storey structure with the capacity to accommodate up to 1,400 worshippers. The facility is expected to ease congestion in surrounding prayer spaces and serve residents in the area.

The President was accompanied at the inauguration by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, senior government officials, and members of the public. Following the official opening, President Muizzu toured the mosque and inspected its facilities.

The inauguration comes as mosque construction and development projects continue across the Malé region under grant assistance, as part of the Government’s broader initiative to expand prayer facilities nationwide. Several mosques are scheduled to be opened later this year, while a number of newly completed mosques on various islands were inaugurated ahead of Ramadan.
