For many residents of Malé, finding a taxi at any given time of the day has long been a daily struggle.

Requests often go unanswered, short trips within the city are frequently declined, and getting a ride — especially during peak hours — can feel nearly impossible. While some commuters may get lucky when heading to Hulhumalé, for many, the challenge has become a routine part of life in the capital.

But that reality may soon begin to change.

The government on Thursday night launched the Malé Taxi Line — a new, structured taxi service aimed at transforming urban transport in the city.

Designed to address long-standing issues, the service promises 24/7 availability, improved safety standards, and a more reliable system for passengers. Authorities say fares will be fixed and regulated by the Transport Ministry, ensuring transparency and putting an end to inconsistent pricing.

The service will begin with a fleet of 120 electric vehicles, introduced in three different sizes. These cars are environmentally friendly and have been specifically adapted to suit the Maldives’ climate and the narrow roads of the capital.

Passengers will be able to book rides through a mobile app or by calling a dedicated hotline — making access easier at any time of the day or night.

Officials say the initiative is expected to ease the daily frustrations faced by commuters and bring a long-awaited sense of order to taxi services in the Maldives.

For a city where getting a taxi has often been a matter of luck, the Malé Taxi Line could mark the beginning of a more dependable and accessible transport system.
