In a closely watched nationwide vote, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party has emerged with a clear lead in the Local Council Elections, securing the largest share of seats across the Maldives.
Preliminary results released by the Elections Commission show the MDP winning over 42 percent of the 555 council seats — more than 238 seats nationwide. The ruling People's National Congress followed with 216 seats, accounting for around 32 percent.
The opposition’s strength was also reflected in the cities, where the MDP secured majorities in all five cities, including retaining key mayoral positions — reinforcing its dominance in urban centres.
Beyond the two main parties, independent candidates made a notable impact, winning over 13 percent of seats, amounting to more than 70 council positions. Smaller parties also secured limited representation, with The Democrats winning two seats, while Jumhooree Party and Adhaalath Party secured one seat each.
Saturday’s vote extended beyond council races. Maldivians also cast ballots in the Women’s Development Committee elections and a national referendum on whether to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
The referendum delivered a decisive outcome, with more than 68 percent voting “No” and only around 30 percent in favour — a clear rejection of the proposal.
While final results are expected later this week, the preliminary figures suggest that major shifts are unlikely, pointing instead to a confirmed opposition edge in local governance and a firm public stance on electoral reform.
