Hundreds of supporters of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), led by Opposition Leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed, took to the streets of Malé on Thursday night, demanding that the government reinstate individuals they say were dismissed from their jobs because of their political affiliation.

The MDP alleges that several of its supporters have been terminated from positions in state-owned companies due to their support for the party.

Protesters marched across the capital, chanting slogans and calling for the resignation of the government as well as the heads of several state-owned enterprises.

The rally, which drew hundreds of participants, was led by Nasheed and other opposition figures. Demonstrators said the dismissals were politically motivated and called on the government to end what they described as discrimination against opposition supporters.

The government has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
