Parliament Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim has been removed from two of the legislature’s most influential committees, in a move that comes amid growing political speculation in Malé.

According to updates published on the People's Majlis website, Nazim is no longer a member of the Parliament Standing Committee on National Security Services and the Standing Committee on Public Finance — both considered among the most powerful oversight bodies in the chamber.

The development has raised questions due to the manner in which it was carried out. Contrary to established parliamentary practice, the changes were not announced during a sitting of Parliament. Notably, the sitting was chaired by Nazim himself. Traditionally, such committee changes are first declared on the floor before being reflected on official platforms.

The removal comes against a backdrop of unconfirmed reports and political murmurs suggesting internal tensions within PNC Parliamentary Group. Some local media outlets have reported that efforts may be underway to remove Nazim from his post as Deputy Speaker.

Responding to the speculation, PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah denied that there are any efforts underway to remove Nazim from the Deputy Speaker position.

With limited official clarification and questions over procedure, the developments add to uncertainty within Parliament’s leadership, as attention turns to whether further changes will follow.
