The Maldives has been eliminated from the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Pakistan in Malé today.
The tournament is being held to celebrate 75 years of football in the Maldives. Following today's result, the national team no longer has a mathematical chance of reaching the final.
The Maldives had already lost its opening match 1-0 against Afghanistan. Even if the team wins its final group match against Bangladesh, it can only finish with three points. Pakistan now has four points, ensuring the Maldives cannot progress to the title match.
The defeat came under re-appointed Hungarian coach István Urbányi, who is leading the national team for a third stint. Pakistan's victory was particularly significant as the Maldives had generally enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings between the two sides.
After a goalless first half, Pakistan broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute through Umar Nawaz.
The visitors then sealed the victory with two goals in the closing stages of the match. Abdul Samad Shahzad doubled Pakistan's lead in the 84th minute after connecting with a ball cleared forward by Otis Khan.
Pakistan's third goal came three minutes later when a clearance by Haroon Abdul Rashid deflected off Aisam and into the net.
The Maldives will now play Bangladesh in its final match of the tournament, while Pakistan remains in contention for a place in the final.
