The Maldives is mourning the loss of Dr. Aminath Fazna, the country's first doctor to specialize in developmental pediatrics, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 47 while undergoing cancer treatment in Malé.

Dr. Fazna completed her medical education and specialist training at the National University of Malaysia and the University of California before returning to the Maldives to dedicate her career to helping children with developmental disorders.

As a developmental pediatrician, she played a pioneering role in assessing and diagnosing children with autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and learning difficulties. In October 2024, she began seeing patients at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, bringing a much-needed specialty to the country's healthcare system.

Her passing has sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues, patients, and families who remember her not only for her medical expertise but also for her compassion and unwavering commitment to the children under her care.

Dr. Fazna was laid to rest on Thursday night following the Isha prayer at Masjid al-Ta'aawun. Though her life ended too soon, her pioneering work and the lives she touched will leave a lasting legacy in the Maldives.
