Today, as the Maldives marks National Engineers’ Day, one of the country’s most iconic infrastructure projects offers a fitting reminder of what engineering can achieve.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, a civil engineer with a PhD in Civil Engineering, was Minister of Housing and Infrastructure when the Maldives undertook its largest infrastructure project at the time — the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge.

Opened in 2018, the bridge transformed connectivity between Malé, Hulhulé and Hulhumalé.

Muizzu played a leading role in bringing the project to reality — from its planning and development to its completion.

Now, eight years after its opening, the bridge stands not only as a major piece of infrastructure, but also as a symbol of how engineering can change the way a nation lives, works and connects.

And perhaps there is no better way to mark Engineers’ Day than by remembering that some of the biggest changes in a country begin with an engineer looking at a challenge — and imagining a way across it.
