The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) concluded its National Congress on Saturday night, following three days of discussions, policy debates and votes on major proposed changes to the party’s structure and political agenda.
Among the key decisions was the abolition of the party President and Vice President positions, making the Chairperson the highest-ranking official within the party. Delegates also approved the creation of a Deputy Chairperson position and other changes to the party’s leadership structure.
The Congress also approved former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail’s “Bodu Badhalu” (Major Change) reform agenda, with 520 of 563 delegates voting in favour. The proposal calls for changes to the Maldives’ system of governance, including reforms to the roles of the Head of State, government accountability, Parliament and public participation.
The three-day Congress also featured an investment forum, where local councils presented investment opportunities to potential investors.
The Congress brought together MDP members and delegates as the party prepares for its next phase of political activity.
