Some acts of courage leave a mark that crosses borders. And some sacrifices are remembered far beyond the shores of home.
Italy will posthumously award MNDF Sergeant First Class Mohamed Mahudhee the Gold Medal for Civil Valour, its highest distinction for acts of exceptional civil courage, in recognition of his service during a search and recovery operation for missing Italian divers in Vaavu Atoll.
Mahudhee lost his life on May 16, 2026, while taking part in the operation to recover five Italian nationals who went missing during a dive near Alimatha. He was among the Maldivian servicemen deployed in the search effort.
Now, as Italy prepares to honour his courage, the Embassy of Italy in Colombo and the Honorary Consular Agency in Malé have launched a fundraising initiative to support his family.
Donations made to a dedicated bank account will be transferred to Mahudhee’s legal heirs.
The initiative is more than a gesture of sympathy. It is a reminder that courage can unite people across nations, and that a sacrifice made in the service of others can leave a lasting legacy.
As Mahudhee’s service receives international recognition, the fundraising campaign offers another way to stand beside the family he leaves behind.
