The Maldives Police Service has implicated Amin Construction Pvt. Ltd. in the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) corruption scandal. During a press conference on 18 September 2024, police revealed that Amin Construction played a significant role in facilitating corruption involving former FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel and others.
The case, linked to the misuse of FIFA's COVID relief funds for football clubs, alleges that Bassam used over MVR 3 million from the USD 1.9 million relief fund to purchase luxury apartments in Amin Avenue, a complex developed by Amin Construction.
The police investigation indicates that the company helped Bassam cover up the embezzlement by creating fake documents to show that the funds had been returned to FAM’s account. Additionally, Amin Construction is accused of helping launder the stolen money. The case, involving Bassam, former FAM Finance Head Mohamed Ageel, and Hassan Waheed, has been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution on charges of embezzlement, fraud, and money laundering.
FIFA had earlier suspended Bassam, and a normalisation committee has since taken control of FAM, which is now reportedly in debt of over MVR 80 million.
