Member of Parliament for Baarashu Constituency Ibrahim Shujaau has been removed from the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Standing Committee on State-Owned Enterprises, as police continue to investigate a leaked Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) report linking him to MVR 42.5 million in suspicious transactions.
The report highlights transactions between November 2023 and January 2024—centered around a MVR 23 million contract for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony. The Parliament Secretariat awarded the contract to SIWEC, a military-run welfare company, which then subcontracted the event to Official Events—a company co-owned by Shujaau. MVR 13.1 million was transferred to Official Events and allegedly used to purchase luxury apartments for the shareholders.
Additional transfers include MVR 4 million from SIWEC to DG Holdings and MVR 2.3 million to Quick Sure, a company registered to Shujaau’s cousin, Deputy Minister Mohamed Nafiz.
The FIU also flagged over MVR 16 million in deposits from various SOEs to Official Events between December 2023 and January 2024, and a separate MVR 10.5 million transfer from Malé City Council to Quick Sure in November.
In total, MVR 42.5 million was directed to companies owned by Shujaau and his brother through government event contracts.
Shujaau, who also served on the inauguration's organizing committee, denies wrongdoing and claims no knowledge of any formal investigation. Maldives Police have confirmed the case has been under investigation since April.
