President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, during his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) General Debate, articulated his vision for the Maldives to rise to the highest levels of development by 2040. The President emphasized that this ambitious goal will be achieved through a focus on increased productivity, digital transformation, and the sustainable use of the nation’s natural beauty and marine resources.
In support of this vision, President Muizzu announced key strategies aimed at boosting productivity and modernizing the country's digital infrastructure. He outlined plans to improve ICT infrastructure, enhance digital literacy, and strengthen connectivity across the nation. By 2030, the President expects the digital economy to contribute up to 15% of the Maldives' GDP.
To diversify the economy and foster new industries, President Muizzu unveiled a plan to establish the Development Bank of Maldives and build a robust financial sector. He further emphasized the need to empower women in public office and introduced the creation of a Presidential Youth Advisory Board, designed to ensure that the voices and needs of young people are represented in policymaking.
In addition to economic reforms, the President highlighted the role of innovation and creativity in advancing the country’s flagship tourism sector. This includes the expansion of the Maldives' main international airport, which is central to the country's tourism-driven economy.
President Muizzu’s vision reflects his administration’s commitment to long-term economic development, social equity, and environmental sustainability as the Maldives seeks to position itself among the world’s most developed nations by 2040.
