The Maldives is set to implement a nationwide ban on vaping, beginning December 15, 2024. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu made the announcement on social media, highlighting his administration’s commitment to tackling the growing use of vaporizer devices among the country’s youth.

According to President Muizzu’s post on his official X account, the government will start by prohibiting the import of vaporizer devices, parts, and accessories from November 15, 2024. Following this, the use, sale, manufacturing, promotion, and even possession of vaporizer products will be banned entirely from December 15, 2024.

This decision comes in response to rising concerns from the Maldives Medical Association and various sports bodies, who have raised alarms over the increasing popularity of vaping, particularly among young people, including athletes. These organizations submitted a petition urging the president to take action against vaping in the country, citing health risks and the potential negative influence on youth.

The government has justified the move as a protective measure to safeguard the younger generation from the harmful effects of vaping and to ensure a healthier future for Maldivian youth.
