Maldives Police and MNDF Seize 468kg of Drugs Worth MVR 1 Billion from Sri Lankan Vessel

Malé, Maldives — In a major anti-drug operation, the Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) seized 468.6 kilograms of drugs from a Sri Lankan fishing vessel that had illegally entered Maldivian waters near Makunudhoo Island. The operation, announced during a press briefing by Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, resulted in the arrest of five Sri Lankan nationals.

The confiscated drugs, valued at over MVR 1 billion, include 344 kilograms of methamphetamine and 124.6 kilograms of cocaine, according to initial investigations by the Maldives Police. The suspects, aged between 21 and 37, are residents of Dondra and Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, as confirmed by a statement from the Sri Lankan Navy.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu lauded the efforts of the law enforcement agencies, posting on X, "Safeguarding the country from drugs is my administration's highest priority. I thank our law enforcement authorities for their hard work in enforcing the law."

The successful operation underscores the Maldives' commitment to combating drug trafficking and enhancing maritime security. As the investigation continues, the authorities reaffirm their dedication to protecting the nation from illicit activities.
