President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has dismissed Ibrahim Faisal from his position as Minister of Tourism. The decision, announced today, comes amid reports of political tensions between Faisal’s father, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and the President.
Faisal, who was appointed to the post due to his father’s influence within the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PNC), has faced criticism over his lack of experience and qualifications in the tourism sector. Industry stakeholders and the public also raised concerns about his limited English proficiency, a crucial skill for engaging with the international tourism industry. Addressing the criticism, Faisal had previously promised to improve his English within six months.
Following his dismissal, Faisal reportedly called his father, who is currently in Malaysia on a private visit. With his removal, President Muizzu has assigned interim oversight of the Ministry of Tourism to Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed. The move signals a potential reshuffle in key government positions as political tensions within the ruling coalition continue to unfold.
