Malé, Maldives – The Maldives and China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in sports development, marking a significant milestone in bilateral ties.

The agreement, signed between the Maldives’ Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation and the Fujian Provincial Bureau of Sports of China, aims to boost cooperation in areas such as sports medicine, anti-doping initiatives, athlete training programs, and infrastructure development.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu emphasized that the partnership will provide training opportunities for Maldivian athletes in China and facilitate coaching exchange programs, participation in international events, and the establishment of sports training camps. He highlighted that the MoU aligns with the Maldives’ Sports Development Plan, which targets a podium finish by 2040.

The agreement also focuses on promoting inclusivity in sports by introducing initiatives for people with special needs. Minister Rafiu credited President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership in advancing the sports sector and fostering international cooperation.

“This partnership is not just about improving sports but also about building lasting friendships between our nations,” Minister Rafiu stated, expressing confidence that the collaboration will leave a lasting impact on future generations of athletes.
