The Parliament Secretariat is facing heavy public backlash after issuing a midnight press release accusing a social media user of spreading misinformation—despite the user citing publicly available data from Parliament’s own website.

X user Jubraan Shareef had compiled and posted performance statistics of MPs, showing that with 93 members, the current Parliament has completed or is working on only 262 tasks—146 in Parliament sittings and 116 in committees. That’s just 2.82 works per MP on average. She further noted that 91.3% of MPs have done fewer than 5 works since their term began, calling out a largely “lazy and inactive” Parliament.

Instead of responding with transparency, the Secretariat issued a press release just past midnight on 28 July, a public holiday, accusing Jubraan of lying and spreading false information. The release attempted to discredit her without refuting the data or offering a clearer breakdown.

The response quickly backfired. Citizens questioned why Parliament reacted so aggressively to a tweet by a user with only a few hundred followers. Many asked: If the data is wrong, why not publish the correct figures?

The incident has reignited criticism of Parliament's lack of accountability, with many calling the response excessive and absurd—arguing it proves exactly what the stats show: a Parliament unwilling to be held to account.
