President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a strong message to critics of the military, saying he is not ashamed to strengthen the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and questioned the patriotism of those who oppose efforts to empower the armed forces.
Speaking at the MNDF’s 133rd anniversary ceremony at Kalhuthuh'kalaa Koshi, the President said defending the country’s independence is his highest duty and reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to enhancing all branches of the military—land, sea, and air.
Highlighting the vastness of the Maldives’ territory—99 per cent of which is ocean—President Muizzu stressed that protecting the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is essential. He said the work started so far is just the beginning, and pledged continued efforts to strengthen national defence.
He also announced that applications for the National Service will open soon, as part of the Government’s broader push to improve military readiness and create a more resilient defence system.
The President urged every Maldivian to take pride in the MNDF’s role and support ongoing reforms to improve its operational standards. He said national defence must be rooted in genuine love for the country, and called for solidarity in the face of growing security challenges.
As part of the ceremony, President Muizzu presented awards to top-performing MNDF units and the fittest soldiers of the past year. A new ribbon was also introduced to recognise excellence in health and fitness. The President concluded the event by handing over rifles to newly graduated recruits, symbolising their readiness to serve.
