Maldives Police Service has withheld the passport of a 21-year-old man in connection with an incident in which a young woman fell from the ninth floor of a building in Male’ on Friday night, landing on the roof of a nearby house.
The man, identified as Raud Mohamed Zilaal, was with the 21-year-old woman at the time of the incident. Police, during a closed-door media briefing, confirmed that CCTV footage shows the woman was not pushed, dismissing widely circulated allegations on social media.
According to investigators, a group of individuals had gathered for a party earlier that night, after which some of them moved to a different location. From there, the man and the woman entered a nearby building, and CCTV footage captured their activities on the stairwell before the fall occurred.
Police also confirmed that both individuals tested positive for cannabis.
While the investigation is ongoing, social media has been flooded with unverified claims, including allegations of gang rape and foul play. Names and photos of individuals said to have attended the party are being circulated online, raising concerns over defamation and the spread of misinformation.
Police have urged the public to refrain from making baseless claims that could jeopardise the investigation or unfairly harm uninvolved individuals.
