President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has established a Special Presidential Commission to investigate the fall of 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed from a nine-storey building in Malé City on April 18, 2025.

The commission is composed of three members: former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munawar, Brigadier General (Retired) Ahmed Mohamed, and Dr. Mohamed Habeeb. Dr. Munawar will serve as Chair of the Commission. According to the President’s Office, the Commission will conduct an independent investigation and present its findings directly to President Muizzu.

This move comes after days of widespread public outrage and youth-led protests, amid accusations that the Maldives Police Service mishandled the investigation and attempted to shield politically connected individuals.

Former Police Commissioner Ali Shujau, who had promised a fair and impartial probe, resigned on Saturday evening as public trust in the police collapsed. Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has since been appointed as the Acting Commissioner.

By establishing the Special Commission, President Muizzu aims to restore public confidence and ensure a transparent and credible investigation into an incident that has sparked national concern.
